40 years ago -- School voters to consider Bonner bond

FIVE YEARS AGO
April 10, 2012
Zak Breitenbach, a deputy for the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, is Stewartville's new community oriented policing (COPS) deputy. "This job is one thing that I wanted to do some time in my career," he said.
Competing in the 2012 Northwoods Youth Wrestling Association Individual State Championships at the Mayo Civic Arena March 31-April 1 were Reid Rinn, Quade Mullenbach, Blake Carr, Hunter VanDyke and Shad Curtis. All wrestlers finished in the state's top 16.
Ed and Jeanette Wendt of Stewartville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Easter Sunday. They were married April 8, 1962 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Racine.
Ministers who took part in the Stewartville Community Good Friday services at the Stewartville Civic Center were Marcus Kendall, Dr. John Grams, Josh Kruger, Byron Meline, Rick Scott, Wane Souhrada, Glen Holland, Dave Hoot, Becky Hoot, Emily Carson, Father Matt Fasnacht and Chad Skaran.
The Stewartville FFA Ag Sales Team receive first place at the regional competition at Red Wing on April 4, thus qualifying for the upcoming state competition in St. Paul.
TEN YEARS AGO
April 17, 2007
Charlotte Kath was crowned the Stewartville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164's poppy queen for 2007. Poppy princesses include Tara Rogers and Amelia Welter.
Stewartville's two-time HVL All-Conference third baseman Andria Rogers committed to play college softball for Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Chess team members, Ben Schimke, Ariel Ballew, Christa Ballew, Conner McCarten, Joe Ambrose, Garrett Roberts, Cole Hanson, Stephen Ballew, Myles Hanson and Kenny Dux, have best performance at the Minnesota State High School and junior High School Chess Championships in Eagan.
Kirby Long is looking forward to beginning his new assignment as the city of Stewartville's COPS deputy.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Leaders at the Stewartville Public Library, in celebration of National Library Week, are sponsoring a fund-raising quilt raffle on Wednesday, May 15. Funds raised from the quilt sale will be used to supplement the budget.
Paul Brekke of Byron and Mary Bucknell of Stewartville will be married on Saturday, April 27 at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Rochester.
Matt Hill, 15, earned his Eagle Award, the highest honor in Scouting, by building an archery range at the Stewartville Sportsman's Club west of town.
Members of the Stewartville boys varsity basketball team were honored recently at their annual banquet. Top honors went to Junior Mitch Hanson, Sophomore Brandon Ness, and Sophomore Eric Schroeder.
Award winners at last week's annual Stewartville High School FFA banquet included Reid Larson, MVP junior; Kelly O'Neill, MVP sophomore; Nate Heeren, Star Greenhand, and Shawn O'Neill, farmer chapter award.
Incoming Stwartville High School FFA officers include Nick Doherty, treasurer; Bob King, sentinel; Nate Heeren, reporter; Reid Larson, vice president; Kelly O'Neill, president, and Ryan Seelbinder, secretary.

Students in grades 10-12 named to the 4.0 honor roll include Steve Rauh, Dana Turtle, Julie Grazier, Zak Knudson, Caleb Jobes, Kristie Loftus, Brooke Kreitinger, Mike Fauver, Marcie Landherr, Tracey Lange, Andy Byrne, Heather White, Myatt Helmers, Lindsay Raygor, Krista Robey and Laura Grazier.
Named to the 4.0 honor roll in grades 7-8 include Mike Lawrence, Josh Beddow, LeeAnna Stacy, Ashley Lawson, Phil Robey, Brooke Reichel, Molly Ness, Andrea Wagner, Lyndsey Cody, Sarah Barnard, Angie Rogers, Kristin Howard, Kelly Larson, Lance Moen, Kirsten Fryer, Katie Distad, Katie Bergrud, Rachel Linbo and Stacy Hopkins.
BPA members headed to Nationals in Orlando, Fla. include, Chad Kalstabakken, Mike Fauver, Rochelle Nicklay, Pam Feenstra and Rena Thompson.
At the annual banquet for Stewartville FFA, the following awards were presented: Most Valuable Sophomore, Stacy Lichty; Most Valuable Junior, Dan Morgan; Star Greenhand, Amy Robinson; Star Chapter Farmer, Keith Mullenbach and Star Greenhand, Erin Boehm.
The Stewartville chapter of FFA, in tribute to the late Chad Capelle, established senior scholarships in his name. The $250 scholarships were given to four seniors, Keith Mullenbach, Cory Boehm, Kim Ryg and Heather King.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
April 21, 1992
A 13-year directing tradition will come to an end in May, when the curtain rings down on the 1992 SHS spring musical "Carousel." The lively Rodgers and Hammerstein musical will be Charlotte Marx' last production in the SHS theatre.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
April 22, 1987
Although a committee studying kindergarten attendance options recommended that the Stewartville School Board adopt an all-day alternate day plan for kindergarten next year, board members were able to hear plenty of arguments against that recommendation during their last meeting April 14.
FORTY YEARS AGO
April 21, 1977
Voters in School District 534 will decide on doubling the size of Bonner School, during the May 17 school election. The district will ask voters to approve a $2.3 million bond issue to build additional classrooms at Bonner, as well as putting a shop area and additional locker room space at the high school. Voters will also decide on a separate $720,000 bond issue for the construction of an auditorium/fine arts center.
Larry Schroeder and Tom Bashaw advanced to the state speech contest due to performances in the region contest. Bashaw will compete in serious interpretation of poetry and Larry Schroeder was named first alternate in extemporaneous speaking.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
April 20, 1967
Emily Snyder, Stewartville High School junior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Snyder, has been selected for the 1967 National Science Foundation Program at Luther College.
Services were held today for P. H. Griffin, former owner and operator of Griffin Funeral Home and Griffin Furniture Store here, who died Monday, April 17.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO
April 24, 1947
A total of 76 students from Stewartville High School participated in the music contest April 17 at Dodge Center and that group earned the district trophy in their class by scoring 76 out of a possible 80 points.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
April 22, 1937
The opening dance at the opera house in Stewartville will be held on Friday, sponsored by the St. Bernard's Club of Stewartville. This is the first dance held in Stewartville in some time and the first in the Opera House since repairs have been made.
H. C. Theopold, district director of the WPA, gave the rush signal on the Stewartville Community building job, as several additional stone cutters and masons began work here today.
EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
April 21, 1932
An enthusiastic meeting of 118 stockholders of the new Stewartville National Bank was held at the opera house last Saturday afternoon at which time officers and directors for the new organization were elected. Dr. C. E. Fawcett was elected president, E. J. Schatz, vice president, and Homer Wooldridge, cashier.
