| Quilt at All in Stitches wins top prize among state entrants Michal Mussell of Plainview loves the look of leaves in the winter.
That's what inspired her to design an award-winning quilt pattern.
"You can see the veins, but the rest of (the leaf) drops away, especially when you're walking in the woods in the snow," she said.
Sandy Evans of All in Stitches in Stewartville sewed a large blue, white and gray quilt from Mussell's pattern. The quilt is now hanging at the All in Stitches shop along Main Street.
Evans' quilt, based on Mussell's design, won the top prize among the entrants from quilt shops across Minnesota. As many as 80 quilt shops were eligible to enter work in the contest.
"There are 80 shops involved," Evans said. "Each store was invited to enter their best piece. Not all of them entered, but there were quite a few."
The quilt contest helped All in Stitches prepare for this year's Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop, to be held beginning this Friday, July 30 through Sunday, Aug. 15. As the winner of the quilt contest, All in Stitches won $2,000 worth of merchandise which it will give away to its customers as the Shop Hop starts this weekend.
During the 17 days of this year's Shop Hop, quilters from across Minnesota will visit as many as 81 quilting shops in seven sections of the state.
All shops will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. during the Shop Hop. There are 16 shops in the northeast section of the state, 11 shops in the northwest section, nine in the central east section, 10 in the central west, 12 in the metro area, 11 southwest and 12 southeast. Southeast shops include All in Stitches in Stewartville and Pine Needles in Racine. There are also shops in Mankato (two), Hayward, Cannon Falls, Montgomery, Spring Valley, Lonsdale, Lake City, Owatonna and Rochester.
Quilters will have an opportunity to tour the southeast section on a pair of chartered buses that will leave from Burnsville, Evans said. The tours of the southeast section will both take two days, she said.
Evans expects All in Stitches to be very busy during the Shop Hop.
"I'm expecting more than 1,000 (customers) in my shop (during that time,") she said. "That's an estimate."
Quilters who visit at least eight shops in each of the seven sections will be eligible to win this year's grand prize: an Alaskan cruise for two, including the cost of airfare. Shoppers who enter their names at different shops across the state will also be eligible to win $100 gift certificates and other valuable prizes from each section.
Evans said she's looking forward to this year's Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop.
"It's just a lot of fun," she said. "You get to shop, talk, see new ideas and eat a little chocolate."
