Meyer to step down as Tiger football coach

Expecting a baby girl in February, which would give him and his wife three children under the age of 5, Stewartville head football coach Aaron Meyer has decided to hang up his coaching headphones and focus on family.
"My wife wasn't pressuring me one way or the other," Meyer explained. "She would have supported me had I wanted to continue. But I made up my mind going into this season, that this would be my last."
Meyer, a 1998 SHS grad and star Tiger QB from 1994-1997, will step down from coaching his high school alma mater after 11 seasons. After his first season as the freshmen football head coach, he grabbed the reigns of a struggling football program in the fall of 2007 and built Stewartville football into a Section One perennial powerhouse. Meyer finished with a 67-42 record and guided the Tigers to the Class AAAA state semifinals in 2014 and 2015.
Though family is the major reason Meyer resigned, he revealed that less-appealing aspects of coaching were a contributing factor.
"I made a promise to myself years ago that when the job started to feel like work, I would let someone else take over," said Meyer. "Football is supposed to be fun and recently there have been parts of the job that have begun to wear on me. Factor that in with the anticipation of having my third little girl at home, and it was an easy decision."
Meyer also admitted that he will miss marching the sidelines of the gridiron under the Friday night lights.
"I have been incredibly blessed to have worked with great coaches and players over the last 11 years," he said. "I love winning more than most people, but I learned early on that I was going to have a bigger impact on the players' lives if I focused on teaching them to have fun playing football while being good natured and hardworking people."
"I don't plan to go away completely, but whoever takes over will certainly have me as a person willing to help wherever I can be of assistance," Meyer concluded.
